“I AM, a survivor’s prayer” Responive Reading by Barbra Graber

Below and available for download here is a responsive reading written by Barbra Graber. Her prayer was originally published in the spring 2014 issue of Timbrel magazine focused on sexualized violence. Barbra responded to the Sister Question asking, “In preparation for the next Timbrel focused on exposing and undoing sexualized violence in our churches, families and communities, what is your prayer for the victims or the perpetrators?

I AM, a survivor’s prayer (written by Barbra Graber as a responsive reading)

Leader: Lord, oh Lord, how can the sexualized violence against your most vulnerable creatures (by those who also call you Lord) continue so long unabated?

Woman: When will the anger subside, the anxiety stop?
Teenage girl: When will the tears cease to surprise, embarrass, overwhelm?
Man: When will I feel like joining the human race again?
Teenage boy: When will I ever be able to trust another’s love?

Leader: How could this be part of anyone’s Divine Plan?
Something is missing from that old, old story.
All: Help us break free to make all things new.
Leader: Something is groaning to be born in us.
All: Help us work out our own salvation.
Leader: Through Christ who strengthens us.
